Title: What Happens When You Bring a Magician to a Country Wedding in Hope BC

Some weddings feel like work. This one felt like a gift.

In April 2022 I drove out to Hope, BC for one of the most memorable weddings I've performed at in 25 years. The ceremony and reception were held at the Hope Golf and Country Club — but don't let the name fool you. This wasn't a stiff country club affair. Think outdoor ceremony by the water, farm-style family vibes, kids running around, grandparents in their best, and a crowd that had clearly known each other for years. The kind of wedding where everyone is already having a good time before the entertainment even starts.

Those are actually my favourite events to perform at. Not because they're easy — but because the energy in the room is already alive, and my job is to match it and amplify it.

The close-up magic — cocktail hour by the water

During the cocktail hour I moved through the guests doing close-up magic. Outside, by the water, country setting — and people losing their minds over cards vanishing in their own hands. That's the thing about close-up magic that never gets old: it doesn't matter how casual or formal the setting is. The moment the magic happens in your hands instead of mine, the reaction is the same everywhere. Pure disbelief, then laughter, then someone grabbing their friend to come watch.

At a family wedding like this one, close-up magic does something extra — it bridges the gap between people who don't know each other yet. The bride's side meets the groom's side over a shared moment of impossibility. By the time dinner started, the room already felt like one group instead of two.

The show — bringing everyone together

After dinner I performed a full close-up stage show for the whole room. Farm-style country wedding, golf club reception, mixed ages from kids to grandparents — and every single person was in it. That's what I always aim for with wedding shows: something that works for the 8-year-old flower girl and the 80-year-old grandparent at the same table. No off-colour jokes, no awkward moments, just genuine impossibility and a lot of laughter.

The volunteers who came up were nervous for about ten seconds — and then they were doing magic themselves. That's when a wedding show stops being entertainment and starts being a memory.

The photographers who captured it all

I rarely get to see myself perform. When you work alone, there's no one watching from the outside. That's what made this wedding extra special — Kiera and Amanda from Daisy and Lily Photography were there, and they documented the whole day beautifully. The moments they captured — guests mid-reaction, the outdoor ceremony by the water, the country charm of the whole event — are exactly what this wedding felt like from the inside.

I'd encourage you to go see their work for yourself. Their full blog post from this wedding is here: [Daisy and Lily Photography — Hope BC Wedding]

If you're planning a wedding in the Fraser Valley, Hope, Chilliwack, or anywhere in BC and want to know what close-up magic and a wedding show actually look like in action — this is a great place to start.

Thinking about magic for your wedding?

Whether it's an intimate farm-style celebration or a full ballroom gala, close-up magic during cocktail hour and an interactive show after dinner creates moments your guests will still be talking about the next morning. If you'd like to chat about your wedding, I'd love to hear about it.
